Eight Teams in Contention for the BBL Knockouts

Posted by

After the start of the first two games in Round 7, Melbourne Stars and the Brisbane Heat will have a good chance to qualify to the semi-finals thanks to their healthy NRR. The rest of the teams have to fight hard to seal a berth in the knockout phase of BBL-6.

Perth Scorchers

Despite missing both Mitchell Marsh and David Willey, the Perth Scorchers registered a 27-run victory over the Brisbane Heat establishing their bench strength. Having lost their match against Melbourne Stars, they would look to regroup and come back to get a positive results against the Hurricanes to move into the semi-finals.

Brisbane Heat

Brisbane Heat are tied with Perth Scorchers on points missing by a bit on NRR. They will look to seal their remaining two games against Stars and Renegades convincingly to go past Scorches to finish in top two to avoid their clash against the Scorchers in the semis. Chris Lynn was missed sorely in the game against the Scorchers, how much would this still affect the rest of their campaign?

Sydney Sixers

Sydney Sixers are in a state of bother now, after losing against Sydney Thunder. Now, they have to win their final match in order to stay in contention. Moreover, they have to win their game against the Melbourne Stars by a huge margin to compensate for their low NRR, the lowest in the BBL.

Melbourne Stars

Melbourne Stars, last years runners-up have two games left in the last two phases of the league stage. They have gone to the top of the table after their 7 wicket win over in-form Perth Scorchers, quite possibly sealing their spot in the semi-finals. They would look to wrap the league stage up with two more wins.

Hobart Hurricanes

Hurricanes would have their tails up after recording the highest ever chase in BBL history of 223/8. They will play their only remainder in the league stage against the table toppers which is a must-win game for them to feature in contention for the semis. Winning their last game still won’t be enough as they lack the most in NRR.

Melbourne Renegades

Renegades put up a fight against the Hurricanes taking the game to the last ball in an attempt to defend their 200+ score, but they fell short. They are still left with two encounters against Strikers and Heat’s against whom they have to win both games.

Adelaide Strikers

Last-years semi-finalist, have not been in their best of forms this season languishing near the bottom of the table at 7th. They need to win their remaining games by a large margin against the Renegades and Thunder’s to put themselves in contention for a spot in the final four.

Sydney Thunder

The defending champions have had a poor season so far, winning only two games from their first six. The win against Sydney Sixers have put them in the hunt for the semi final spot. But they would have to depend on the other teams to lose and at the same time they have to win with a good  margin to up their run rate.
