Keaton Jennings – Yet again a South African player in England’s Line up

Posted by

It took 11 balls and a drop half chance by Karun Nair for the debutant, Keaton Jennings to open his account. Once he capitalized on a wide one, which he cut for four confidently towards point, he looked a different player. The Indian pacers tested him with the bouncers and enticed him with deliveries outside off stump, but he showed good focus to play only those at or near stump line.

Jennings was confident batting against most of the Indian bowlers, it must be said though that he was a touch circumspect when batting to Ashwin.

The ability to sweep has what has enabled him to bat confidently against the Indians spinners. At the same time he showcases a straight bat when defending, making sure there are no gaps that a ball can sneak through.

His technique of shuffling forward before going back while playing against spin is something to be noted. He played the sweeps and at the same time went on the backfoot to rotate the strike against the spinners.

Since Strauss’ retirement seven openers have debuted for England. Of the last five of them, Hameed and Jennings are close to being a perfect folly for Cook. Jennings is the only opener amongst the last five who made their debut in the position to score a century.

It was ironic that England were bringing another left hander and with Ashwin in the kind of form he is, it was a pleasant surprise that Jennings was able to get to a century on his debut.

The South African born opener showed that he was willing to be patient leaving 30% of the balls bowled at him by the pacers. The spinners though constantly made him play but he defended comfortably helping him set up a good innings. Unfortunately, he pushed one hard from Ashwin to the gully, leaving the crease after scoring an important 112, the second highest runs scored in an innings on debut against India.
